DIY Homemade Playdough

Me and my kids love play doughs. I used to make porcelain flowers with air-dry clay and it was one of the most satisfying feelings! I just bought a store-bought dough once and it was great but I still wanted to try to make something myself.

Homemade Playdough

I had once made a fruit wreath using a flour & salt dough and I know a similar dough could be made and used as a play dough – which is kids safe and well Home made. So we tried one:

Ingredients: IMG_5151

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1.5 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoon cream of tartar
  • Food coloring

I found Cream of tartar in a grocery store at Islamabad – and its POWDER πŸ˜‰ its actually a preservative and will keep the dough last longer – so make sure you add it to the recipe!

We combined water, salt, oil, and cream of tartar in the saucepan and heated it till it was nice and warm. (the salt i used was purple because my toddler painted it with her marker)

Then we slowly added flour to this concoction and knead it to a dough like consistency.

Lastly we made four balls and added food coloring and mixed and played (read messed up the kitchen).

A little more flour can be added to it if the dough is too runny. It can be stored up in the ziplock.

Our soaked up too moister from the humid air and went very runny after playing for couple of time and we had to throw it. Next time I will make it more firm! But hopefull this is a problem living in an island, and it wont be an issue else where.

In any case – it was good till it lasted πŸ˜‰

Happy crafting!
